Wes Craven, a filmmaker who seems to live for reinventing horror in every decade he's worked in, made magic in the mid-80s when he gave life to horror maniac Freddy Krueger. Freddy is known the world over by now. He's a veritable pop culture icon at this point, with dolls, T-shirts and tattoos popping up everywhere, even 15 years after he first entered our movie-going collective.
But Craven didn't just reinvent horror. Nightmare
became one of the most successful film franchises in the history of film, making fledgling distributor New Line Cinema a major player in the film world.
With 7 films, a television series, comics and videos to his name, Freddy has recently become one of the most requested characters for release on DVD (save for Indy and Luke). Well, New Line was listening to customer demand, and they've put the series out as a pretty sweet box set. But they didn't just release a box set - they've released a testament to Mr. Krueger and Wes Craven's legacy. Each and every film is here now, and they are all so well done, that we've decided to go through them with a fine-tooth comb.
By the way, the entire series of Nightmare films is also available now in separate, movie-only DVD editions. But be aware that the only way you can get the bonus Nightmare Encyclopedia disc is in this boxed set. Note also that the boxed set comes in an embossed slip case, and includes two pairs of 3D glasses (which you will need to watch the 3D ending on Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare) and a high-quality, 36-page collector's booklet.
So come with us as we go through the set title by title, and disc by disc. We'll give you the good, the bad, and the Freddy in our little trip down Elm Street...
