Imagine my slight dismay to discover that Horsemen is actually a psych-thriller featuring Dennis Quaid as a detective on the hunt for a group of killers that have styled their murders on the legend of the Four Horsemen. Instead of Zhang Ziyi co-starring as Quaid’s kick-butt partner she is instead the daughter of one of the Horsemen’s victims.
The film opens with the first grizzly introduction of the creepy killers via a tray of teeth. Freshly ripped from some poor soul’s unwilling jaw kinda teeth. Then the murders begin. Each one depicts the victim strung up by hooks through their skin (aka body suspension). The person is then stabbed to allow blood to fill the lungs so he/she drowns on his/her own blood. What Detective Breslin (Dennis Quaid) has to uncover is the motive of the murders and the link between the victims. The race is on to find either the killers or the fourth victim before he or she is sacrificed. Breslin fears that the fourth and final murder could bring forth a real life Apocalypse.
I felt that Horsemen was a mixture of the religious overtones similar to The DaVinci Code with the grizzly “Horsemen” themed murders similar to the “Deadly Sin” fatalities we saw in Seven along with the sub-culture references (tattooing, piercing, suspension) that formed the foundation for Strangeland.
Accompanying the murders is Detective Breslin’s fractured home life that never fully recovered after his wife passed.
This is most evident when it comes to his neglect of his two sons Alex (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Sean (Liam James). I wish the writers had clearly stated why Breslin constantly and so easily ditched his sons to chase suspects. Instead, I had to fill in the blanks myself by assuming he didn’t hate the boys or hate being dad. But being around the boys brought back memories of his long departed wife and in order to fully escape those memories he had to ignore his past even if it meant hiding from his own children.
At least, that’s my interpretation.
Zhang Ziyi takes another stab at the Western film market with her role as “Kristen”, the adopted daughter of David and Mary Anne Spitz (Peter Stormare and Onalee Aames). When Mary Anne is found murdered by the Horsemen killers Kristen relies on Detective Breslin to find the ones who killed her mother. Kristen will eventually put a twist in the plot. Some might see it coming but I sure didn’t. I felt the character shift gave Ziyi a prime opportunity to show yet another facet of her acting ability. Though her character is a little hampered by Ziyi’s handling of the English language (for some reason she enunciated better in Memoirs Of A Geisha) I give
Overall, Horsemen wasn’t as thrilling as I thought it was going to be. I don’t know what the buzz was about but this was just an adequate straight-to-DVD offering, in my book. The performances are good especially from Quaid, Ziyi, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Eric Balfour as the gay-phobic brother to his recently “outed “sibling. But the story lost me around the bend more than once leaving me less chilled and more confused by the time the end rolled around. There’s something about Horsemen that feels half-baked or like the director had to cut out a lot of pivotal scenes to fit into that 90 minute running time.
Some of those missing parts are included in the Deleted Scenes feature along with commentary from Jonas Akerlund (director) and Eric Broms (director of photography).
