Plague Town, despite having an awesome title, isn’t actually about a town suffering through plague. It’s your run of the mill backwoods horror tale, which features special effects that are just a shade above what you would expect from an indie horror flick.

There’s no town full of plague victims… just another group ofed up mutants who need some new stock in the hopes that they can stop having tard babies.

The film starts off awfully slow, with a group of five ***s traveling from the city to look at some ruins in the country. Turns out this dysfunctional family is looking to get a little bonding action. I say nothing says bonding like a family orgy… but they want to look at some ruins. We’ve got a father, his two daughters, a boyfriend, and a step-mother… and each one has a problem and a need to argue… a need that takes up the first 45 minutes of the movie until it feels like a generic horror version of an episode of the Jerry Springer show. Then in the blink of an eye the film kicks into high gear, as the tardo hicks make their presence known and people start getting*** ed up. The family must figure out a way to escape the clutches of a horde of genetic reject children and some unscrupulous adults. You’ve seen this plot before, and there’s nothing new going on here… just another case of nothing new for trash like you.

Director David Gregory does some nice things throughout the film, and this is definitely an indie flick. For a low-budget horror flick, Gregory provides a nice amount of creep and a larger scale than most backwoods horror flicks. The horror elements of the movie are handled perfectly; however, it’s the other elements of the movie which drag it down. The character development is a little too forced, especially for characters that aren’t that interesting in the first place. The pacing of the film is off… by a shitload, and the beginning of the film crushes the life out of the movie with pointless bickering and unenjoyable dialogue. If I wanted to watch a family fight and argue, I’d just put together a family reunion. As it is, you’ll want to turn the movie off after the first 45 minutes… which is a shame.

The film is noticeable for one thing and one thing only, its special effects. There aren’t a boatload of kills here, but the ones that are here are awesome. There’s lots of brutality on display here and even a bunch of mutant child murders. You can’t go wrong with that. Plague Town offers up a smorgasbord full of head-severing, throat-cutting, eye-gouging, and face-shooting. If that doesn’t sound like a good Friday night, then I don’t know what is.

Plague Town could be better with some cuts, less of a focus on characters that aren’t that interesting, and a little more of the red stuff. As it is, it feels like two flicks, the lesser first half and the better second half. For an indie flick it’s pretty solid, but it definitely has its flaws.

Final Synopsis: It’s not good enough to go out and rent or anything, but if you can find it and watch it for free, then go for it.

Points Lost: -1 for lame characters, -1 for too much character development, -1 for pacing problems, -1 for some sound unevenness, -1 for a CGI moment that doesn’t really work
